Competitions with Gluten-Free Categories

Competition is the cheapest honest feedback a brewery can buy — and the Great American Beer Festival now runs three separate gluten-free categories, judged by people with no stake in your success.

Why bother​

A read against peers, not against barley beer. "Good for a gluten-free beer" is a compliment that means the opposite of what it says. A gluten-free category is where you find out how you stand against the people actually solving your problem.

Judge feedback on faults. Gluten-free brewing has its own fault profile — the mash and fermentation behave differently, and body and head retention issues are specific to it. A trained palate naming a fault precisely is worth more than a hundred customers saying "it's nice."

A credential that travels. In a category where buyers are cautious, a medal is external validation.

Tier: Directory. We are telling you where the categories are. We have no relationship with any competition organizer and make no prediction about how a beer will place.

The three GABF categories​

The 2026 competition lists three gluten-free categories rather than one:

  • Category 26 — Classic Gluten-Free Ale or Lager
  • Category 27 — Hoppy Gluten-Free Beer
  • Category 28 — Specialty Gluten-Free Beer

Three categories rather than one is a meaningful signal about how seriously the segment is being taken.

The distinction, in the guidelines' own words​

This is the part worth reading closely. From the Category 26 definition:

"All ingredients must be free of gluten. Within the framework of these guidelines, beers brewed with barley, wheat, spelt, rye, and other gluten-containing ingredients may not be categorized as Gluten-Free."

So enzyme-treated barley beer is excluded. Only beer made from naturally gluten-free grain qualifies.

That matters beyond the entry form. The Brewers Association drawing the same line the TTB draws in Ruling 2020-2 and that celiac organizations draw for their communities means the distinction this site has always made is now the industry's own position in three independent places. What to check before entering​

Eligibility. GABF and the World Beer Cup require entrants to be licensed commercial breweries. Homebrew competitions run separately under BJCP guidelines.

Deadlines. Registration closes months before judging, and shipping windows are narrow and strictly enforced.

Fees and volume. Per-entry fee plus the beer you ship.

The category definition, verbatim. Read the current-year guidelines and enter the category your beer actually fits — a wrong entry is a wasted fee and a poor score against criteria you were never trying to meet.

Shipping. Interstate shipment of alcohol has rules. Check them before you pack.
