What they do​

Beverage development and production services, covering the whole span between a concept and a pallet:

  • Beverage development — commercial formulation, financial modeling, feasibility consulting
  • Production and manufacturing — contract packer identification, production set-up and management, supply chain optimization
  • The Lab — quality assurance testing and pilot production
  • Sourcing and procurement — ingredients and packaging
  • Regulatory and compliance
  • Post-production — logistics, import/export, order and inventory management

They state they serve both "Startups & Emerging Brands" and "Established Beverage Companies."

Right for you if you have a beverage concept and no production capability — no brewhouse, no supply chain, no co-packer relationship — and you need someone to build the route rather than advise on one piece of it.

Not what you need if you already brew. A brewery with equipment and a supply chain is buying something much narrower, and is usually better served by a consultant or a supplier's technical staff.

One thing to know going in: their public site does not mention gluten-free anywhere. That is not a mark against them — they are a general beverage company and gluten-free is a specialism — but treat gluten-free capability as something to establish in conversation rather than assume from the brief.

Bard's Beer worked with BevSource in its early days. That is the whole of our direct experience and it is old; the founder was building the business around the same period Bard's was building its own.

We have no current relationship with BevSource, no commercial arrangement, and no recent experience of their work. The service list above comes from their own site, read on the date shown — not from memory.

How to approach them / what to ask​

Arrive with a defined product. "A gluten-free beer" is not a brief; "a 4.8% golden ale, sorghum-malt base, aimed at the celiac market in the upper Midwest, 500 barrels in year one" is. Every decision you have already made is one you are not paying someone else to make badly.

Then ask the questions a general beverage brief will not surface:

Gluten-free production experience. Have you taken a gluten-free beverage to production before? Which, and how recently? A team that has done it once knows where the traps are.

Dedicated or validated lines. When you place a product with a contract facility, how do you qualify that facility for a gluten-free run — dedicated equipment, or cleandown and changeover validation? Who validates it, and against what threshold? See Dedicated Equipment and Facilities.

Testing regime. What gets tested, at which points, by which method, and who holds the results? Finished-beer testing does not establish the claim — see Gluten Testing Methods and Their Limits — and the pre-fermentation evidence has to be retained for two years under the FDA rule. Their Lab does QA testing; ask what it covers for gluten specifically.

Ingredient traceability. Will the finished product have lot-level documentation back to the grain? If your co-packer cannot say which lot of malt went into which batch, you do not have a defensible claim.

Who owns the claim. You, them, or the co-packer? Settle it before you sign, not after a test result.

Regulatory scope. Worth using their compliance service here, because a sorghum beer is regulated by the FDA rather than the TTB and the label rules differ. See Labeling Rules.

Commercial terms. Minimum volumes, cost, what you own at the end, and whether the formulation follows you if you leave.
